The Compassionate Friends

About Us

Back in the mid 90's, several families of Southside Virginia were grief stricken by the loss of their child or children. In their attempt to search for help to aid their grief, a support group in Richmond called "The Compassionate Friends" was discovered. After travelling to Richmond to attend several of the monthly TCF meetings, they realized a real need existed within Southside Virginia in establishing their own support group. Therefore they joined forces and started making plans and completing necessary requirements to start a local TCF chapter. In October 1999, the first official TCF support meeting was held in Victoria, VA. Their meetings were later moved to meet in Kenbridge due to being a more centralized location for those traveling from directions throughout the Southside area.

We hold an annual 5K Memorial Walk the third week in October each year which is our only fund raiser. At the end of the 5K walk, refreshments are served followed by a balloon release. The balloons carry the names of each of our children or loved ones that have been taken too soon. On the second Sunday in December each year, we participate in the World Wide TCF Candle Lighting Service held at the Victoria Library, where a wave of light shines on in loving memory of all deceased loved ones. The program begins at 7pm in each time zone, lasts for one hour as the names of our deceased children and loved ones are read along with special poems and readings. Then as each candle is extinguished at 8pm in one time zone another time zone begins lighting candles which creates the 24 hour wave of light around the world.

The Compassionate Friends is a 501(c)(3) tax exempt charitable organization. All donations are fully tax deductible and we continue to operate soley from generous donations and the help of volunteers.
